The MAMS Project is an ambitious research project that will collect data and biological samples from breastfeeding women across the UK. This will enable scientists and clinicians to identify the underlying causes of the most common breastfeeding problems so that we can support women to breastfeed for as long as they choose.
About The Mams Project
Our mission is to uncover the physiological mechanisms that cause common breastfeeding problems so we can prevent them arising, and resolve them when they do.
Our objective is to apply this new-found knowledge in supporting women to breastfeed for as long as they choose to, with practical, personalised solutions.
The MAMS Project is ambitious and innovative. By taking a longer term approach, where we will gather information from breastfeeding women over the course of their lactation, we can take a deeper look at the mechanisms that control milk production, and better identify what causes things to go wrong.
By collecting biological samples we can look at the factors that affect lactation, like hormone levels, nutritional status and immunity, and identify variations in women who experience breastfeeding problems.
By combining this data, we will be able to build a valuable resource that will enable clinicians and scientists to develop guidelines and personalised treatments for the issues that affect breastfeeding, enabling women to breastfeed for as long as they choose to.
Project Progress
Over the next four years, The MAMS Project will deliver a series of milestones to achieve our goal of developing preventative and therapeutic strategies for the most commonly experienced breastfeeding problems.
